Intel set to launch more LGA-1156 processors soon

Two quad cores, one dual core

INTEL SHOULD BE getting ready to out a few new LGA-1156 processors very soon, although we don’t have a precise date. The good news is that we’ll see two more quad cores as well as an additional dual core model. All three models are an evolutionary step and there isn’t all that much to get excited about with the possible exception being the Core i5 760.

The current “bargain bin” quad core Core i processor is the Core i5 750 and it’s proven to be quite popular despite the lack of Hyper Threading. The Core i5 760 is a mere 133MHz faster at 2.8GHz and it too appears to lack support for Hyper Threading. However, if the Core i5 760 is priced right, it should prove to be another popular consumer option and it will most likely replace the Core i5 750 over time. The Core i5 760 features 8MB of L3 cache, as well as 256KB of L2 cache per core, which is the same as the Core i5 750 and it should use the same B1 stepping. Intel appears to be taking orders for the new model now and the spec code is SLBRP.

Intel is also readying the Core i7 880, again a slightly faster model and this is the first quad core LGA-1156 processor to breach the 3GHz barrier as the Core i7 880 is clocked at 3067MHz. This is again a mere 133MHz faster than Intel’s Core i7 870. Again there doesn’t appear to be any changes to the spec apart from the faster clock speed. The spec code should be SLBPS and again it appears as if Intel is taking pre-orders for this model, which is expected to end up retailing for the same price as the Core i7 870 is currently selling for which should be somewhere around $580.

The last of the three new speed bumped models is the Core i3 550 which is the third Core i3 desktop processor. Yet again we’re looking at a meagre 133MHz speed improvement and no real other changes. The spec code for this model is SLBUD and yet again, Intel appears to be taking pre-orders of this model.

It’s also worth reminding you that Intel’s Core i7 875K and Core i5 655K multiplier unlocked models are also set to launch in the very near future and Intel does again appear to be taking pre-orders for both of these models. Hopefully Intel will launch some, if not all of these new models at Computex, although most, if not all of them were expected to have launched by now.S|A
