AMD quietly drops CPU prices

No huge discounts

YESTERDAY AMD QUIETLY dropped the prices for many of its Phenom II and Athlon II processors, although the biggest price drop is a mere 18.9 percent. Some models had their price dropped by as little as 99 cents and one model even went up in price by $4. We’ve compiled the numbers to make life easier for you to see the price changes, although there really isn’t much to get excited about.

Some adjustments are also suggesting that we’re looking at the end of the line for certain models. For example, the Phenom II X2 550, 550 Black Edition and 555 Black Edition are now all priced at $87 in quantities of 1,000 units. The same goes for the Phenom II X4 925, X4 945 and X4 955 Black Edition, all of which are priced at $139.

We’re seeing the same with the Athlon II processors where the Athlon II X4 630, 635 and 640 are all priced at $99 now. The Athlon II X4 435, 440 and 445 also have identical pricing at $74 followed by the Athlon II X2 245, 250, and 255 of which all are priced at $64.

There are no real bargains to be had, but the new pricing puts most all of AMD’s standard Athlon II processors at less than $100. Some of the energy efficient models are still priced higher, but as these aren’t intended for the general consumer market the pricing of these models are always higher anyhow. All dual core Phenom II processors are also priced at well under $100 now and the most expensive quad core is a mere $159 with the remaining models at $139 making for quite a bargain. The six core models didn’t see much of a discount, but then again, that was hardly expected as these are still AMD’s flagship models.

We should be seeing some new models arriving within the next month and a half, unless AMD has changed its roadmap. Three new six core processors are on the way, namely the Phenom II X6 1035T, 1045T and 1075T and they’ll slot in between the current two models. We should also see a faster quad core model in the Phenom II X4 970 alongside the faster dual core Phenom II X2 560. Several new Athlon II models are also expected between now and the end of the year, but again we don’t have a specific timeline for when they’ll be introduced.S|A
