GeForce GTX 560 Ti set to launch on the 25th

Gets double monikers and is already mostly leaked in detail

NVIDIA IS GETTING ready to take on AMD where it hurts with its upcoming GeForce GTX 560 Ti which should be launching on the 25th of January if the leaks so far prove to be right. The new card is expected to go head to head with AMD’s Radeon HD 6950 which AMD has just decided to offer a cheaper 1GB verion, so it’ll be interesting to see how price competitive the GTX 560 Ti will be.

Nvidia’s Ti moniker used to stand for Titanium if memory serves, but it hasn’t been used for a long time and we’re not quite sure why Nvidia has brought it back to life, unless there will be several different SKUs of the GeForce GTX 560. It’s clear from pictures that leaked on Taiwanese website CoolPC that Nvidia has gone for an extremely simple card design with a 4-phase PWM, although the memory layout is quite unusual with a 1+4+3 position of the GDDR5 memory chips. The card still requires a pair of 6-pin PCI Express power connectors which suggests that it’s quite a power hungry card despite the simple PCB design.

As with all of Nvidia’s current cards the GTX 560 Ti sports two DVI ports and a mini HDMI port. As this is a mid-range card it also only has a single SLI connector. The cooling solution that has leaked uses a base plate and three 8mm thick heatpipes, but doesn’t appear to use the vapour chamber that Nvidia has started to use on its high-end cards. This is meant to be Nvidia’s reference cooling solution, although it doesn’t look like the typical setup Nvidia tends to use, so we’re not sure if this really is the case for the 560.

Stock speeds should have the GPU clocked at 822MHz with the shaders at 1644MHz and the memory at 1GHz (4GHz effectively). Details of overclocked cards at 880MHz/4.2GHz and 1GHz/4.58GHz have also leaked ahead of the launch. The GPU is said to have 384 shaders and not too unexpectedly it’ll feature a 256-bit memory interface. All we need to know now is the pricing and the performance, although Nvidia isn’t just going to have to offer better performance now, but also a competitive price thanks to AMD’s 1GB Radeon HD 6950 which will be the GTX 560 Ti’s nemesis.S|A
