Marvell gets Apple’s stamp of approval for HomeKit development

The differene between and SDK and a shiny thing is a mere stamp

Marvell logoMarvell is introducing the first iOS 8/HomeKit compatible device SDK/HDK/platform. While it may look like any other IoT development kit out there, this one is special because Apple said it is.

All of this new release is based upon the Marvell 88MC200 ARM Cortex-M3 based controller and an Avastar 88W8801 802.11n Wi-Fi controller. Add in Marvell’s EZ-Connect software and some related code and you have the SDK/HDK/platform for HomeKit compatible device development. All joking aside though, Apple’s blessing is a big deal, without it developers don’t tend to get very far in the shiny thing compatible space, or at least have a much harder time getting certified. With it development costs could tumble for them.

Marvell’s play here is to be the silicon behind all the lights, doorknob controllers, and hardwood flooring sensor networks that companies targeting the Apple user home automation TAM covet. It is a potentially lucrative market and Marvell is quite right in aiming to be the silicon that powers it. This SDK/HDK may not be anything more than the same chips without the software and special stamp of approval but these latter things can make all the difference in the world to buyers.S|A
