While on the topic of Crysis 2, it seems to have vanished from steam. Something about Crysis 2 violating some newer Steam distribution rules buy Crytek giving D2Drive exclusive DLC or something?

I believe it is something to do with DLC.

Yep, Steam no longer sells Crysis 2. It's all related to EA's new online platform, Origin.

Now, now, now...
A little bit late, but I finally decided to play the game.
I can say only one thing. The game is awesome, I'm impressed, the graphics are at very high level.
The good thing- it runs extremely smooth on my PC at hardcore setting.
The story is very good as well, the environment, the aliens, everything is amazing.

in game, in graphics settings there should be selection for those things as far as I remember

but how can i assure that is actually works?
is there somewhere preferably in the beginning of the game a place where e. g. the tesselation can be spotted?

no you won't spot any specific stuff, it is there, your system crawls to the halt that means it is working

Actually I did find: the pile of bricks left to the table where Prophet lies is tesselated, but is a mere texture in DX9. But hell where are tesselated walls shown in preview?
And the worst of all: no custom save oppotunity
