Nokia no longer world's biggest mobile phone maker

The Finnish phone company has spent 14 years at the top.
Nokia announced disastrous first quarter results last week, posting a net loss of €929m.
Nokia's sales were also down 30% year-on-year for the first three months of the year.
The company also acknowledged that it had sold just 82.7 million mobile devices during the quarter, down from 108.5 million a year earlier.

While Samsung is not set to release its full first quarter results with details of the total number of units sold until Friday, analysts reportedly expect the figure to land somewhere between 85 and 92 million units.

Well, Nokia is microsoft's mindless husk now. Really loved old symbian smartphones from pre-iphone era; maemo and nokia n900 were amazing (first and only true pocket PC of iphone era). Unfortunately instead of making keyboardless maemo phones they wasted time working with intel on meego. So intel killed maemo and then killed meego, ha-ha. But hey nokia n9 with meego (well, it's actually maemo 6, but without binary compatibility) is pretty awesome, maybe I'll buy it. Of course the fact they knifed meego for the sake of winphone is enough reason for me to never buy anything WP. Also microsoft has enough money from bullying android OEM for royalties.

I said the same for the Nexus, but at 1280x720 it is very, very difficult to notice PenTile unless you look really closely, and no one really uses a smartphone that way. I agree it is too big though, that Lumia 900 is perfect for size.

I must say that the way the glass curves at the edges on the Lumia is great, makes it feel like the screen doesn't stop there, and just feels really nice in the hand. Might have to get one when my contract is up in Sep.

As my eyesight steadily gets worse, I'm now wishing for a fifty inch cell phone that defies the laws of physics and fits in my pocket.

Like I keep saying, time after time - usable screen area is too restrictive a constraint on the size of mobile electronics. The solution is to use a head-mounted-display separate from the unit carrying the guts of the processor/memory/radios. You should be able to have a 2048x1280 monocle that looks good regardless of your vision...
