I think itīs been already several times been discussed here that Steam is not reliable source for GPU usage or selling amount data.

April numbers show now that
7970 has 0.36%
7950 has 0.12%
7800 series has 0.12%
7700 series has 0.08%

7970 is shown 2 months before rest, if taking same time for 7970 it had 0.22%

So according to Steam survey 7970 was selling more than 7800 and 7700 series combined for first 2 months. Think AMD and all GPU manufacturers wish that would be right. I have serious doubts about that.

Tellingly, the Steam survey is only useful to get a broader picture of the systems Steam users have (though the fact that taking part in the survey is optional even kind of invalidates this specific usage of the data).

It's highly selective and not representative of the general GPU market at all.

Notice that it has integrated Intel graphics @ only 10% market share? lol.

EDIT: Compare to this, for instance:

Q4/11 numbers by Peddie Research:

NVidia is in a very bad situation at the moment. Their total market share continues to be crunched in between AMD's and Intel's more and more powerful integrated solutions - and even the discrete market is all but lost given they still have only one (rather low-yielding) 28nm chip to compete in the 2012 desktop race. Some people may even consider Charlie's articles on NVidia's situation a little optimistic.

You ignored the fact that 79xx series launched way before 77xx and 78xx series.

0.22 is february number for 7970, so not ignoring it.

Also, if ignoring that and just using april numbers we get that 7970 is more popular than 7950, 7700 and 7800 series.

Of course more enthuastics upgrade faster and that might explain how higher end card show on list fast.

If checking those GPUs that has only mar-apr on list (7700, 7800, 7950, GTX680) that would still mean that GTX680 has outsold each by about 2 to 1. GTX680 has 0.22% share on april.

I think it's not only yields. Someone else is taking the valuable manufacturing capacity, so NV can't produce enough chips.

Graphics card shortages to see improvements in late May

Quote:
AMD and Nvidia, impacted by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC's) fully-booked capacity, had rather weak shipment performance in the first quarter; however, as more capacity will be gradually released by TSMC, shortages of 28nm graphics cards are expected to improve in late May, according to sources from graphics card makers.

In addition to the recently announced GeForce GTX 690, Nvidia is also set to release GeForce GTX 670 and GeForce 610 in May and June, while AMD is set to reduce its Radeon HD 7000 series graphics cards' prices to counter Nvidia's attack.

Might as well join the off topicness

So is it because NV moves more cards, ATI less, **trolling removed**

Or NVIDIA GPU users who uses Steam is 2 times of the AMD GPU users.
We all can draw our own conclusions here, so it's still meaningless by this survey alone.

If gtx680 users are 2x as likely to participate in the survey, then a comparable number of 680's were sold.

Is this what you are saying?

There are no controls. It's like reviews on Newegg. It's too easy to "stuff the ballot box".

Without knowing the sample size of the survey, or even if it is possible that one person participates more than once per month, figures really are meaningless.

Take a sample size of 10,000. You would need 22 cards to get 0.22% of the share. The joke becomes extrapolating that to ~35 million Steam users, let alone hundreds of millions of discrete card users. So if the GTX680 gets roughly ~0.33% of the total steammarket, extrapolated to say 300,000,000 discrete cards in use worldwide, you would get to a figure or 1,000,000 GTX680's sold in slightly more than one month. Does that sound reasonable?
