ViewSonic launches 3D monitor for AMD graphics cards

3D glasses included

ONE THING THAT so far has been missing from AMD’s repertoire is a 3D monitor, or rather support from a monitor maker despite the fact that AMD has been able to do 3D for quite some time. This has all changed now thanks to ViewSonic and its new V3D241wm-LED 3D display which has been designed specifically to work with AMD graphics cards.

Let’s start with some basic specs. The V3D241wm-LED is a 23.6-inch display with 1920×1080 resolution and it features a 1000:1 contrast ratio (20,000,000:1 dynamically), 300 nits brightness, a 2ms grey to grey response time and of course LED backlight. In terms of connectivity the V3D241wm-LED has a D-sub, a dual-link DVI-D and an HDMI port, but it also features two 3.5mm jacks for audio in and out and a USB port that is used in combination with the supplied 3D glasses. It also has a pair of 2W SRS Premium sound speakers built in.

As this is a 3D display it features a 120Hz refresh rate, unlike traditional LCD panels which are stuck at 60Hz. The panel will work at 100, 101, 110, 120 and 121Hz which seems to be slightly better than most 3D displays. The glasses are wired which feels a little bit low-tech compared to the wireless options available from just about every other manufacturer, but on the plus side you’ll never have to re-charge the batteries. The downside is, of course, that only one person at a time can watch 3D content on the display, but as it’s intended for games rather than movies, this might not be a huge issue. Oddly enough we weren’t able to find a single picture of the supplied glasses, something you’d think would be a feature that ViewSonic would want to show off.

Currently the V3D241wm-LED is only available in Europe with a fairly steep asking price of £330 ($528) in the UK. However this compares favourable to similar 3D Vision displays from Asus and Acer on sale in the UK and we’d expect a lower retail price in the US, as the equivalent models from Asus and Acer are also cheaper in the US market. So for those of you that have been waiting for a 3D display for your AMD graphics cards, here it is.S|A
