Biostar announces its G300 Series of SSDs

Consumer SSDs get even cheaper…

A couple of days ago Biostar announced that they would be bringing a new line of consumer SSDs dubbed the G300 series to market to target the eSports and gaming markets. What the G300 series offers specifically for those markets is a rather nebulous question. But with the aggressive price points that Biostar is using it’s hard not to give the G300 a second look.

Compare these GB per $ metrics to the best-selling SSD on Amazon, the 250 GB Samsung 850 EVO at $0.36 GB per $, and you have a very compelling offering from a value standpoint.

Biostar Goes for Silicon Motion

The G300 Series SSDs use a 4-channel flash controller hooked up to a SATA III 6Gb/s interface. This SM2256 controller from Silicon Motion launched back in mid 2015 and is apparently now cheap enough to make its way into the G300 series. No word on who Biostar is sourcing the NAND for this product from but the SM2256 controller can work with NAND from pretty much any manufacturer.

Biostar is bringing some much-needed competition to the sub $100 SSD market. Often what we see in this range is ancient technology, shoddy NAND, and accidentally misprinted products. But with Biostar’s G300 series we have a modern controller from Silicon Montion, 550 MB/s read speeds, a simple all black design, and a really compelling set of price points.S|A
