Did hard drive prices shoot up?

I was checking Newegg for a desktop hard drive for the first time in a while when I noticed that even 1TB drives, which had been languishing in the $70-$80 level are now $140 or higher.

Is that just due to a production layoff, or did something happen?

Have you been living under a rock?

Floods in Thailand submerged facilities which produce hard disks and components.

    Maybe

Ok, so that's the reason. I went to 5TB on my file server from 2.5TB some time back, so I haven't needed storage for a while, but now it's starting to run a little low. Not quite desperate yet, just planning ahead.

This situation might last through whole 2012.

This is not how I imagined SSDs to become a viable buy. :/

I believe that it will last through next year perhaps longer. I am very thankful to have bought my three 2TB Hitachi drives when I did at $80 each and now they are $200 a pop and rising!
